Club legend Samuel Eto’o has been immortalised at the Visit Mallorca Estadi with the unveiling of a personalised mural.

The former striker was in attendance with RCD Mallorca, FC Barcelona and LaLiga directors for the unveiling of our tribute painted by local artist René Mäkelä ahead of our hosting of La Blaugrana.

“It’s incredible to come back home and see all this,” Eto’o told club media. “It brings back beautiful memories and it seems like it all happened yesterday. The truth is that RCD Mallorca gave me everything, everything I am.

“My love has always been for RCD Mallorca – everyone knows that. I love Barcelona very much but Mallorca comes before all the other clubs in the world.”

Club president Andy Kohlberg was also in attendance for the visit paid by the recently nominated president of the Cameroon Football Federation to witness the super-imposed image of Eto’o come to life on a 10 by seven metre mural.

“Samuel Eto’o is an icon for our club,” Kohlberg said. “I am very happy and proud to present this tribute to him. It is a great honour to have him here with us. The mural by René Mäkelä was an idea we had several months ago and here we are now – it’s wonderful.”

Mäkelä is a renowned artist who has painted contemporary personalities and celebrities around the world, but could not resist the opportunity to create something with his local club.

“This work is a gift from all Mallorquinistas to one of the most important icons in the club’s history,” the artist said. “It has been a complicated challenge due to the size and weather conditions, but I think that the mural captures the idea that we wanted to transmit.”

“We are very proud that René Mäkelä has collaborated with us,” added Alfonso Díaz, CEO of Business. “We think that he has been able to represent in this mural the importance that Samuel Eto’o has had for RCD Mallorca.”

Tickets for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon officially went on sale on Tuesday amid French government diabolic harsh ploy to sabotage the Africa Cup of Nations with lame and ridiculous claim that a new ‘Covid variant’ IHU has been detected in Cameroon.

Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, who is also president of the competition’s organizing committee, said tickets will be sold online and in established kiosks across the country.

“We have taken adequate measures to avoid trafficking. We understand that our stadiums have limited capacity. All we can do is to assure Cameroonians that tickets will be on the basis of first come, first served,” Eric Binfon told reporters.

Tickets will be priced between 3,000 XAF and 20,000 XAF (5 USD to 35 USD) depending on the category and stage of the competition, Binfon said.

The tournament, which features 24 teams, begins on Sunday with hosts Cameroon taking on Burkina Faso at the 60,000-seat Olembe stadium in the capital Yaounde.

The biennial competition will end on February 6.

Over the past few weeks thousands of people from Cameroon have crossed the Logone and Chari rivers to find refuge in Chad due to ongoing violence. There are now around 100,000 people, the vast majority of whom are women and children, living in around 20 informal sites. We are mobilising teams in response, to provide care for people in need.

“The first inter-communal conflicts between Mousgoum fishermen and Arab herders in Cameroon began in August this year,” says Jessie Gaffric, MSF head of mission in Chad. “For a few weeks, we organised mobile clinics to provide basic healthcare to 11,000 refugees in Chad, before the situation calmed down.”

However the violence resumed suddenly and brutally, as it did on 8 December in Kousseri, a Cameroonian town on the border with Chad’s capital N’Djamena due to tensions over agricultural, pastoral and fisheries resources, which have not been resolved.

Forty-three people were injured by knives, bullets or arrows. Twenty-five of them had to be hospitalised in N’Djamena because of the lack of appropriate care in Kousseri.

Since the Southern Cameroons crisis hit the global stage, Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, who opted for a military solution, has made fire and brimstone speeches, announcing that the insurgents who have grown in experience and confidence over the last five years, will be rolled back by the country’s military in no time. But each time he delivers his long, meaningless speeches, the situation only gets worse. 

To date, some 10,000 Cameroonian civilians have been killed in a war that was clearly avoidable and some 4,000 army soldiers have been sent to an early grave with close to 2,000 soldiers living with long-term physical disabilities due to the war. 

As for the economy, it has taken a nosedive, with thousands of Cameroonian graduates hitting the pavement in search of jobs. Things are really looking down for the country, especially as corruption and the struggle for power have become the main challenges that seem to herald the end of a long, corrupt and ineffective era. Mr. Biya, the country’s long-serving president, has nothing to show for his 40 years in power. 

He has divided the country, tribalized the army which now operates like his personal militia. Dissenting voices are swiftly taken to the country’s maximum-security prisons and the Diaspora, which is supposed to play a critical part in the country’s development, is instead viewed as the government’s enemy, making it hard for the country’s huge diasporic community to invest in Cameroon. 

Here below are some of his empty threats that have instead been counter-productive since the conflict that has pitted the government against the country’s English-speaking minority erupted.

A court in Los Angeles has made Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver’s divorce official 10 years after they separated following the actor-turned-politician’s infidelity, US media reported Wednesday.

Celebrity news site TMZ said the pair’s divorce proceedings took a particularly long time because of the number of financial assets to negotiate.

Shriver, a journalist and the niece of former US president John F. Kennedy, first filed for divorce in July 2011.

Weeks later, the “Terminator” star admitted to having an affair with the family nanny, Mildred Baena, with whom he had a son in 1997.

“After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago,” Schwarzenegger, who was governor of California from 2003 to 2011, said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times when he and Shriver separated.

Shriver cited “irreconcilable differences” in the divorce filing.

The couple, who met in 1977 and were married in 1986, have four children together.

As the world grapples with the highly mutated Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, scientists have identified a new strain of the Covid-19 causing virus in Southern France.

Known as ‘IHU’, the B.1.640.2 variant has been reported by researchers at institute IHU Mediterranee Infection in at least 12 cases, and has been linked to travel to African country Cameroon.

However, the researchers noted that it is too early to speculate on how this variant behaves as far as infection and protection from vaccines is concerned.

The yet-to-be peer-reviewed study, posted on the preprint repository MedRxiv on December 29, revealed that IHU has 46 mutations and 37 deletions resulting in 30 amino acid substitutions and 12 deletions.

Amino acids are molecules that combine to form proteins, and both are the building blocks of life.

Fourteen amino acid substitutions, including N501Y and E484K, and nine deletions are located in the spike protein.

Most currently used vaccines are targeted at the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, which the virus uses to enter and infect the cells.

N501Y and E484K mutations were earlier also found in Beta, Gamma, Theta and Omicron variants.

“The mutation set and phylogenetic position of the genomes obtained here indicate based on our previous definition a new variant we named IHU,” the authors of the study said.

“These data are another example of the unpredictability of the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants, and of their introduction in a given geographical area from abroad,” they added.

The B.1.640.2 has not been identified in other countries so far or labelled a variant under investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the researchers, the index (first) case was an adult diagnosed positive by RTPCR performed in a laboratory on a nasopharyngeal sample collected in mid-November last year.

Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding posted a long Twitter thread in which he said that new variants keep emerging but it does not necessarily mean they will be more dangerous.

“What makes a variant more well-known and dangerous is its ability to multiply because of the number of mutations it has in relation to the original virus,” Feigl-Ding tweeted on Tuesday.

“This is when it becomes a “variant of concern” – like Omicron, which is more contagious and more past immunity evasive. It remains to be seen in which category this new variant will fall,” he said.

Many countries are currently experiencing a spike in Covid-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant which was first identified in South Africa and Botswana in November last year.

Since then, the variant of concern has spread to over 100 countries.

In India, a total of 1,892 cases of Omicron variant have been detected across 23 states and Union Territories so far.

Droves of armored vehicles are patrolling the streets of Limbe in Cameroon’s conflict-torn southwest region ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) soccer finals starting on January 9 that separatist militants have vowed to disrupt.

Cameroon is hosting the tournament in six cities, but security is potentially most at threat in Limbe, a city on the tropical Atlantic coast whose surrounding region has been rocked by armed attacks since war broke out in 2017.

The conflict, in which armed groups are trying to form a breakaway state called Ambazonia, has killed at least 3,000 people and forced nearly one million to flee.

Violence has worsened this year as separatists increase their use of improvised explosives.

“My fear … is that the recent phenomenon of bomb blasts which have been happening in other parts … could be a common phenomenon during this AFCON period,” said local journalist Honore Kuma.

Insecurity is just one issue facing the tournament. Concerns about the readiness of stadiums and the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant have also made headlines in recent weeks.

Limbe’s Omnisport Stadium will host matches from Group F comprising Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and Gambia. The group’s first game will be between Tunisia and Mali on January 12.

The nearby regional capital of Buea, where some Group F training will take place, was struck by two explosions in November including one in a university that wounded 11 students.

Authorities have kept security plans under wraps, but promised there will be no disruption to Group F matches.

Armed police, gendarmes and soldiers are already positioned at major intersections. Checkpoints have been set up on roads into the city.

“AFCON will take place in very good conditions. There are no grounds for concern,” said Emmanuel Ledoux Engamba, senior official of Fako territory, which includes Limbe and Buea.

The separatist conflict began in the English-speaking northwest and southwest regions in 2016 when teachers and lawyers protested against their perceived marginalization by the primarily French-speaking national government.

A violent crackdown by security forces radicalized the movement. Armed groups formed amid the regions’ forests and cocoa plantations.

As Limbe readies for an influx of fans, some residents said they are not focused on soccer.

“How will I enjoy it while my brothers and sisters are suffering because of the Anglophone crisis? Every day, they are dying,” said 33-year-old Roland, who lives near the Limbe stadium.

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement from him released by the Pentagon.

Austin is fully vaccinated and received a booster in early October. He last met President Joe Biden on Dec. 21, over a week before he began experiencing symptoms.

“As my doctor made clear to me, my fully vaccinated status — and the booster I received in early October — have rendered the infection much more mild than it would otherwise have been,” Austin added.

Austin said he had requested a test earlier on Sunday after having symptoms while at home on vacation.

He was last at the Pentagon on Thursday. “I met briefly – and only – with a few members of my staff. We were properly masked and socially distanced throughout.”

Last week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shortened the recommended times that people should isolate if they have tested positive from 10 days to five days provided that they do not have symptoms and wear a mask around others for at least five more days.

Austin said he will remain at home for the next five days “in accordance with CDC guidelines.”

“To the degree possible, I plan to attend virtually this coming week those key meetings and discussions required to inform my situational awareness and decision making. I will retain all authorities,” Austin said.

This comes after the Defense Department last week tightened restrictions at its headquarters over concern about the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

The military is confronted with the challenge of maintaining military preparedness for troops, often in close quarters on ships and planes.

In August, the Pentagon mandated that US military service members get fully vaccinated against COVID-19. However, a small number of Republican governors have pushed back against the mandate for National Guard members in their states.

Oklahoma’s Republican governor, for instance, has requested that the military’s vaccine mandate be halted. However, a federal judge last week denied the request, saying the state’s National Guard members must get vaccinated.

Austin is one of the most senior members of the Biden’s administration to test positive for COVID-19.

In October, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas tested positive for the virus.

On Saturday, at least 346,869 new coronavirus were recorded in the US, according to a Reuters tally. The country’s death toll rose by at least 377 to 828,562.

As of Dec. 25, the Omicron variant was estimated to be 58.6% of the coronavirus variants circulating in the United States, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Former US president Donald Trump on Monday enthusiastically backed the reelection of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a hero of the far-right who has been accused of creeping authoritarianism.

In a statement issued along the lines of his frequent blessings to Republican candidates in primary elections at home, Trump wrote that the Hungarian leader has his “Complete support and Endorsement” in elections expected in April.

“He has done a powerful and wonderful job in protecting Hungary, stopping illegal immigration, creating jobs, trade, and should be allowed to continue to do so in the upcoming Election. He is a strong leader and respected by all,” Trump wrote.

Trump welcomed Orban to the White House in 2019, a symbolic acceptance for the prime minister who frequently clashes with the European Union leadership and was snubbed both by President Joe Biden and Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama.

Some Trump administration officials argued at the time that the goal was to keep in the Western fold a leader who had flirted with Russia, and then secretary of state Mike Pompeo made a point of meeting activists who ran afoul of Orban during a visit to Budapest.

But Orban has increasingly been hailed both by Trump’s wing of the Republican Party and European far-right leaders such as France’s Marine Le Pen, especially over his refusal to accept refugees.

Tucker Carlson, a Fox News host close to Trump, broadcast last year from Budapest and was given an interview with Orban as well as a helicopter tour of a border fence.

Orban has also sought to mobilize support on opposition to LGBTQ rights, with a ban on “promotion and display” of homosexuality and a related referendum expected on the same day as the election.

Orban, who has been in charge since 2010, faces a potentially serious challenge from Peter Marki-Zay, who describes himself as a traditional Catholic conservative and has vowed to scrap homophobic laws if elected.

A Southern Cameroons front line leader moonlighting with the Ambazonia Interim Government says President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe represents the secret of endurance and victory for the people of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia.

Professor Carlson Anyangwe added that the continued detention of President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and his top aides in the French Cameroun Kondengui Maximum Security Prison is an indication that the Ambazonia’s chief executive remains a danger to the French Cameroun enemy and his time in jail is greater for the war of liberation.

Speaking exclusively to Cameroon Concord News, Carlson Anyangwe showered praises on Vice President Dabney Yerima for the respect accorded in his end of year speech to President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and the thousands of Southern Cameroonians currently being held in French Cameroun detention centres.

“For over five years now, President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe remains the Southern Cameroons symbol of hope, self-confidence, courage and the secret of endurance and victory in our struggle”  the renowned Professor of Law said during a conversation with our London Bureau Chief, Isong Asu.

Professor Anyangwe’s remarks came as the Ambazonia Interim Government began making investment in the Bank of Ambazonia and the Big Rubbergun Project its top priorities.

“La Republique du Cameroun thought that keeping President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and his cabinet in jail, the Ambazonia liberation work would be over, but five years have come passed and gone, thanks to that great son of Southern Cameroons, Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, French Cameroun is slowly but surely leaving the Federal Republic of Ambazonia,” Carlson Anyangwe told Cameroon Concord News.

In parts of Akwaya, Eyumojock and Upper Banyang in Manyu, Professor Carlson Anyangwe said, the French Cameroun regime were forced to pullout.

“In Ekondo Titi in Ndian, Tatum and Njakiri in Bui, Ambazonia Revolutionary Guards are advancing; in Wum and Weh in Menchum and the Bamenda-Mamfe motorway, the French Cameroun enemy is paralyzed without hope for the future and the anti-colonial current in Southern Cameroons is more prosperous, buoyant and hopeful more than ever before” Professor Anyangwe furthered.

Carlson Anyangwe called President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe an enduring and everlasting personality in Southern Cameroons history.
