Yaoundé has denounced political pressure coming from the United States on its management of the Maurice Kamto Affair and the crisis in Southern Cameroons observing that foreign governments should stay clear of the domestic affairs of sovereign nations.

Communications Minister, Rene Emmanuel Sadi issued the statement following remarks that came from Tibor Nagy, the US top diplomat on African affairs who reportedly said on French radio that, the Cameroonian government was aware that Maurice Kamto was arrested and imprisoned for lame and ridiculous reasons and called for his immediate release.

“I think it would be very wise to release him. Because, whether true or false, he is perceived to have been incarcerated for his political activities and this is unacceptable” said Tibor Nagy

Hon. Tibor Nagy also called on the Biya Francophone Beti Ewondo regime to be more serious in the management of the crisis in Southern Cameroons. In his reaction to the Tibor Nagy interview in France, Minister Rene Sadi noted with contempt for the Trump administration that Tibor Nagy’s words “not only denote the lack of knowledge of the issues and facts concerning the arrest of Mr. Kamto and many of his supporters, as well as the situation in the North West and South West regions but betray a serious impulse barely veiled and unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign country.”

Emmanuel Rene Sadi repeated the Biya regime’s popular inaccurate stereotype that Cameroon is a state of law and that Kamto and his supporters of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon are subject to the rules that govern the republic.

Kamto and his supporters are prosecuted for common law crimes, including insurrection, hostility against the homeland, rebellion and the destruction of public property inside the country and in several diplomatic missions abroad. Tibor Nagy is expected in Cameroon on March 17 as part of an African tour. Both parties will no doubt have the opportunity to explain themselves.

Hillary Clinton has for the first time ruled out running for president in 2020.

“I’m not running, but I’m going to keep on working and speaking and standing up for what I believe,” Clinton said Monday in an interview with News 12, a local TV channel in New York.

Clinton was the frontrunner in 2016 but ended up losing to Donald Trump. “I want to be sure that people understand I’m going to keep speaking out,” Clinton said.

“I’m not going anywhere. What’s at stake in our country, the kinds of things that are happening right now, are deeply troubling to me.”

Clinton has held meetings with some of the Democrats who are now vying for the party nomination or considering a run. CNN has reported that they include former vice president Joe Biden, who has not yet said if he is running.

“I’ve told every one of them, don’t take anything for granted, even though we have a long list of real problems and broken promises from this administration that need to be highlighted,” Clinton said.

Asked if she would run again for some kind of public office, she seemed to avoid ruling that out.

“I don’t think so, but I love living in New York and I’m so grateful that I had the chance to be a senator for eight years and to work with people across our state,” said the former secretary of state and senator for New York state.

US President Donald Trump has condemned an investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion between his 2016 election campaign and Russia as a “witch hunt” in a new tweet, calling for it to end amid reports that it is coming to a close.

“Highly respected Senator Richard Burr, head of Senate Intelligence, said, after interviewing over 200 witnesses and studying over 2 million pages of documents, ‘WE HAVE FOUND NO COLLUSION BETWEEN THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN AND RUSSIA.’ The Witch Hunt, so bad for our Country, must end!” Trump tweeted on Friday. 

Senator Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said recently that the panel has not found evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential.

According to reports, Mueller could file his report on his investigation with the Department of Justice next week. Trump announced in November that his personal legal team would compile a “major Counter Report” to Mueller’s findings.

Robert Mueller has disputed a report that President Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen said Trump directed him to lie to Congress. Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion and has long called for end to the probe. Moscow has also denied any interference in US elections.

“After two years and millions of pages of documents (and a cost of over $30 million) no collusion!” Trump tweeted in December.

In another previous tweet Trump had called the probe the “greatest witch hunt” in the US history. “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.”

Allow Russia to do as they please in Africa or partner with African leaders with a history of war crimes and a tendency toward genocidal behavior? That is the conundrum American military and diplomatic leaders face. Cameroon, specifically, is one of the better examples of the struggle between geopolitics and human rights concerns.

Recently, General Thomas Waldhauser, the head of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), gave a briefing to the Senate Armed Services Committee focused on the military’s concerns in the African nation. With regard to the U.S. military’s relationship with Cameroon and the political leadership of the country, General Waldhauser said, “We were very emphatic with President Biya that the behavior of his troops, the lack of transparency, could have a significant impact on our ability to work with them.” He added that “they have been a good partner with us, counterterrorism-wise.”

Nonetheless, General Waldhauser made clear that AFRICOM is concerned about numerous reports of war crimes and atrocities committed in the African nation. Both General Waldhauser and Ambassador Peter Henry Barlerin have confronted Cameroonian President Paul Biya about these allegations. Compounding their concerns, the Trump administration has decided to cut military aid to Cameroon.

But developments in the African continent might mean that the U.S. doesn’t have many choices of partners and that it must make do with what is available. During the same briefing, General Waldhauser emphasized the threat stemming from Russia’s involvement in sub-Saharan Africa.

“By employing oligarch-funded, quasi-mercenary military advisors, particularly in countries where leaders seek unchallenged autocratic rule, Russian interests gain access to natural resources on favorable terms,” said General Waldhauser. “Some African leaders readily embrace this type of support and use it to consolidate their power and authority. This is occurring in the Central African Republic, where elected leaders mortgage mineral rights—for a fraction of their worth—to secure Russian weapons.”

Russia has been active in other African countries as well. Take for example Sudan. There, Russian private military companies (PMC) are helping the Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir to maintain power in the midst of popular upheaval.

Ambassador Barlerin said, “We are not going to stop security cooperation with Cameroon. We have our differences, Cameroon is a sovereign country and the United States is a sovereign country. Relations between Cameroon and the United States are excellent and longstanding and we aim to continue that relationship.”

American troops in Cameroon are mostly concerned with training their Cameroonian partners in basic soldiering and counterterrorism skills.

Cameroon’s political crisis has taken a turn for the worse as government forces have arrested the winner of last year’s presidential election, Professor Maurice Kamto, a prominent law professor who has vowed that the people’s victory must be returned, or the country will be made ungovernable.

Arrested along with Prof. Kamto was Mr. Albert Dzongang who was with Mr. Kamto at the time the police arrived. Mr. Kamto was at Mr. Dzongang’s home where they were strategizing on the next move in their bid to reclaim their stolen victory.

But the arrest of the learned lawyer was not that easy. As the police arrived Mr. Dzongang’s home, the population came out to ensure their leaders were not arrested. With the crowd increasing, the security forces decided that it was better to negotiate, but when the population was adamant, the forces decided to use tear gas and fired at the crowd, wounding several supporters of Maurice Kamto. Mr. Kamto and several of his supporters have been taken to Yaounde where they will be charged with all the crimes and sins in the world.

In a related story, another senior opposition politician, Celestin Djamen, was picked up from his hospital bed and taken to an unknown destination. Mr. Djamen had been shot on Saturday, January 26, 2019, within the framework of the demonstrations organized by Mr. Kamto and his MRC party. Mr. Djamen was whisked off to an unknown destination with five other persons who had been shot by the police on Saturday.

Prof. Kamto’s arrest only deepens the country’s political crisis that has brought its economy to its knees. Under Mr. Paul Biya, the country’s president, Cameroon has witnessed serious and several political and economic crises and this has fragilized the entire sub-region.

Mr. Biya’s rulership which is predicated upon corruption and nepotism has created huge divisions within the country, with many Cameroonians holding that merit has no place in the country. With Mr. Kamto’s arrest, the government has opened another front in its struggle to stay in power. Cameroon has been dealing with many military challenges in recent times. In the north, it is facing a tough Boko Haram insurgency that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.

In a bid to turn tables on Boko Haram, government forces have been committing violent crimes in the north, making it hard to win hearts and minds in the region. On many occasions, government troops have been caught on video in flagrant acts of human rights violation. The shooting of a woman and her daughter as well as the killing of some young unarmed boys in a village in the north were the incidents that shocked the world the most.

To hide its crimes, the government alleged that the heartless killing of a lady and her children occurred in Mali, a situation that prompted Amnesty International and the International Crisis Group to investigate and the investigations revealed that the incidents actually occurred in the northern part of Cameroon.

In the East, armed groups from the Central African Republic (CAR) remain a dangerous menace to the local population and the military. The armed groups have been carrying out incursions on towns and villages in Cameroon’s eastern region.

But it is the Southern Cameroons crisis that has become a millstone around the government’s neck. A crisis that started as a simple strike by teachers and lawyers in October 2016 is gradually making the independence of the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon a certainty, especially as there are targeted killings and huge refugee movements in and out of the country.

Ever since the crisis started, the country’s president also known as the “monarch”, has refused to listen to many respectable people across the world. The Pope has had an opportunity to talk to Mr. Biya. Leaders of Western Countries have advised him to pursue dialogue as a sure means out of the impasse. But all the advice has fallen on deaf ears.

Cameroon, a once peaceful nation, has been gripped by the ‘dictator’s disease’; a disease that attacks African countries that have been ruled by sit-tight dictators. The Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and Somalia are some of the African countries that have been victims of this devastating disease.

Many African dictators always bequeath civil wars and political chaos to future generations when they leave power. In many cases, they leave power forcefully or through a civil war. Cameroon is on its way to joining this unfortunate club as Mr. Biya and his collaborators hold that the best way to address political issues is to unleash a reign of terror on the people they are supposed to govern and protect.

The Southern Cameroons crisis which could have been addressed through an inclusive dialogue has today become a civil war wherein government soldiers are shooting and killing many innocent civilians, as they cannot fully engage the Southern Cameroons fighters who are lurking in the jungles. The fighters, for their part, are using rudimentary weapons to protect themselves and this is adding to the chaos that has made life unbearable in the English-speaking regions.

The fighting is unfortunately consuming many young soldiers who have been pushed by the government to go and kill Southern Cameroonians whose initial objective was to put their grievances to the government. The government’s violent response caused the demands of Southern Cameroonians to mutate and, today, almost all Southern Cameroonians, even those in government, are in support of secession.

In many towns and villages in the two English-speaking regions, corpses of young innocent civilians are being discovered at roadsides and the government seems to be padding itself on the back for accomplishing such a feat. It is a really tough to know that government officials of Beti extraction are really celebrating when their fellow compatriots are being shot down point blank. It is even more baffling to know that the same authorities have kept on talking about one and indivisible Cameroon when their brutality is slowly dividing the country.

To defend themselves, many young Southern Cameroonians have taken to the jungle and many are now using whatever means that are available to them to fight a government they believe is intent on killing all the young men in the region. The fighting clearly indicates that Cameroon will never be the same again. Holding a country together clearly goes beyond political sloganeering and brinkmanship.

From every indication, the crisis has entered a very critical stage with the government holding that the more people it kills, the greater its chances of keeping the country one and indivisible. The government is gradually losing Southern Cameroons. Its high-handedness is dividing the country. In a bid to keep the country one and indivisible through force, it is only succeeding to tear it apart.

Time is gradually running out. It is time to make necessary changes. The government has to abandon its legendary high-handedness if it wants to keep Cameroon one and indivisible. Terrorizing its people and intimidating political opponents will not keep Cameroon one and indivisible. The government must seek to meet Southern Cameroonians halfway if it really wants to keep the country united. The ball is in its court. The world is watching. The country’s president has refused all useful advice and this will surely turn out to be his Achilles heels. Arresting Prof. Kamto might be that mistake the government might regret for a long time.

• The Cameroonian Anglophone problem is a conflict of the West’s making being exploited by an unhinged despot. The West cannot pretend nothing is happening yet it planted the seeds of this harvest of thorns.
• Paul Biya is Africa’s longest-serving President and one would think he has an idea when it comes to responsible leadership but the years have only cemented his ineptitude. His response to the Cameroonian Anglophone region’s secession demands has been heavy-handed and unnecessary but for a man who never gets questioned, it is to be expected. Social media is awash with atrocity after atrocity that the Cameroonian army is committing against its own people which unfortunately justifies their demands for independence. If their army is going to treat them like foreigners, then maybe they are foreigners.
•   The world seems to be waking up from its slumber and paying more attention to Cameroon but 200 soldiers, gendarmes, and police officers, 600 separatists and at least 500 civilians have died in the violence. 30,000 Anglophone refugees are in Nigeria while 437,000 have been internally displaced in Cameroon. UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Cameroon, Ms. Allegra Baiocchi has said, “attacks against civilians have increased and many conflict-affected people are surviving in harsh conditions without humanitarian assistance due to the dramatic underfunding of the response
• . Cameroon today can no longer be a forgotten crisis; it needs to be high on our agenda.” However, as the world drags its feet, civilians are being killed in Cameroon. Paul Biya is unhinged. The separatists are unhinged. The common citizenry bears the brunt of the fire. The United Nations estimates that around 4.3 million people in Cameroon – one in six people and mostly women and children – require lifesaving assistance. The conflict is rooted in the arbitrary borders imposed by imperialists.
• In 1961, Britain’s Cameroons colonies were divided between Nigeria and Cameroon after a referendum. Becoming an independent state was simply not on the table. “Logically, I would have expected the UN to give them the option of gaining independence and stand on their own,” Henry Baaboh, a legal expert told DW before adding, “I think it is that third option which is disturbing Southern Cameroonians up to this day.” That the crisis is called the “Anglophone problem” is telling as to the nature of the issue: it is a problem imported from the West.
•  Jürgen Zimmerer of the University of Hamburg identifies the elephant in the room quite aptly, “The problem is that when European powers partitioned Africa, they split up families, relatives, and communities that got along very well, whereas in some cases, communities that were enemies or competed against each other were bundled together into one territory.” Now that one country is made up of people on two different ends of the spectrum, people are dying.
• The murderous regime of Biya cannot be exonerated as it has been instrumental in the violence but the West is just as culpable. This is a conflict of the West’s making being exploited by an unhinged despot. It is quite arrogant for the West to pretend nothing is happening, and wait for the body-count to reach a certain threshold yet it planted the seeds of this harvest of thorns. The practice of pretending loss of African lives does not warrant swift action must come to an end. This is the 21st century!
